After launching in 2012, Instagram has become a popular social media platform for celebrities to endorse brands and expand their following.
Here’s a list of the top ten most followed people on the app.
PSG footballer Neymar makes it into the top 10 most followed on Instagram with 88.1 million followers.
The Brazilian is the second most followed footballer on Instagram and is also renowned as the most expensive player in the world.
Real Madrid have reportedly set aside €300 million (£289 million) for Neymar Jr and if all goes ahead, it would break the world transfer record.
9. Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber has 96.3 million followers on Instagram.
He is known to share a variety of posts that include selfies, funny videos, and pictures of models wearing his Purpose Tour merchandise.
As well as advertising his own products on Instagram, Justin occasionally showcases his endorsement deals with the likes of Calvin Klein, Beats By Dre and Best Buy.
8. The Rock
Otherwise known as Dwayne Johnson, The Rock is almost at the 100 million mark with 99.2 million Instagram followers.
The movie star is regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and was the highest-paid actor of 2016.
After starring in Moana, The Rock gained fans from a much wider audience and is now the 8th most followed on Instagram.
7. Kylie Jenner
Social media superstar Kylie Jenner’s Instagram following has grown to 100 million followers amid speculation about her pregnancy.
Kylie is second most followed on Instagram from the Kardashian-Jenner clan and uses the platform to promote her own line of Kylie Cosmetics as well as other brands.
While currently at number seven on the list, Kylie’s position could climb substantially after her baby is born.
6. Taylor Swift
Despite deleting all her Instagram posts in 2017 and making it clear that ‘the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now’, as her bio states, Taylor Swift has 106 million followers.
As well as advertising her Reputation album and stadium tour tickets, Taylor started ‘stalking’ her fans on Instagram and joined several live streams.
Taylor also won Time Person of the Year in 2017 as one of the ‘Silence Breakers’ after her legal victory against David ‘Jackson’ Mueller, as well as her work with the #MeToo movement.
5. Kim Kardashian West
Kim Kardashian West sneaks past Taylor Swift to take fifth place with 106 million Instagram followers.
Like her sister Kylie, Kim also posts a multitude of brand endorsements including her own beauty company KKW. But her risque selfies and pictures of Kanye West, North and Saint seem to be the most popular.
Kim also announced the name of her third child Chicago with an Instagram post.
With 110 million followers, Beyonce comes in at number four on the list of most followed on Instagram.
The Lemonade singer's pregnancy announcement months before twins Rumi and Sir Carter were born clocked more than 11.2 million likes.
Beyonce is also the only celebrity on this list that does not follow anyone on Instagram, not even her sister Solange, who has a paltry 3.4 million followers in comparison.
3. Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande takes the bronze medal spot with 117 million followers and is renowned for teasing new music on the platform.
A fan of the fun filters on offer, Ariana posts selfies alongside stills or clips from her concerts on the site.
Notably, the image of the Dangerous Woman singer sitting on a stool on her My Everything album cover became a viral meme as fans attempted to recreate the shot
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed man on Instagram with 119 million followers.
The Real Madrid footballer climbed up the most followed on Instagram list from sixth place in 2016, when he had just 82.8 million followers.
Cristiano’s most popular post was when he announced the birth of his daughter with Georgina Rodriguez in November, which gained 11.3 million likes, making the picture the most liked on Instagram in 2017.
1. Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is by far the most followed person on Instagram with 133 million followers.
The Wolves singer overhauled her Instagram in 2018, unfollowing nearly 300 accounts and changing her profile picture to an image of her mother Mandy Teefey.
Selena’s most liked Instagram post was when she revealed her kidney transplant, posting a picture with her friend Francia Raisa, who donated the kidney, in hospital after the procedure.
